Grrl Talk Contributors

Twenty-six different voices are showcased in Grrl Talk: Sass, Wit, and Wisdom from the Austin Writergrrls. Here's a little bit about all of them...

JULIE SUCHA ANDERSON is the co-editor of the Austin WriterGrrl anthology project, Grrl Talk. For five years she wrote a monthly column on family life. Her essays have appeared in many publications, including Gardening at a Deeper Level and AustinMama.com. She has completed her first novel, Still Breathing, and is currently at work on her second.

ROBIN BRADFORD's stories and essays can be found in It's a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons, Mother Knows: 24 Tales of Motherhood, and Three-Ring Circus: How Real Couples Balance Marriage, Work and Family. She has also appeared in Glimmer Train, Boston Review, Quarterly West, Cimarron Review, and Brain, Child, among many other places. Bradford has been honored with an O. Henry Prize and the Dobie Paisano Fellowship for Texas writers. Her monthly column, Mother Load, appears at AustinMama.com.

MARJORIE BRODY has been published in The New England Writer's Network, The Dancing Muse, Pegasus, and Contact. She has twice been recognized for Excellence in Writing at the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference and was a finalist in the mainstream category of the annual Writers' League of Texas manuscript competition.

REGAN MARIE BROWN is an editor and author of The Woman's Way: Celebrating Life After 40 (Andrews McMeel, 2001) and co-author of a coffee table book about the Austin legal profession. She's also an award-winning songwriter.

E. S. CARLSON is the co-editor for the Austin WriterGrrls anthology project, Grrl Talk and a freelance e-book author/ghost writer covering a broad range of topics from glass blowing to finance.

TERRI RECTOR FANN is a music maker, freelance writer, and engineer. Her written work has appeared online and in magazines on subjects from crafting with computers to self-help. She's won several awards for her song lyrics.

MICHELLE WELLS GRANT is a writer whose essays have appeared in the Alameda Times Star, Parents' Press, and Wednesday Writers (2003), an anthology on the San Francisco Chronicles bestseller list.

BEVERLY N. HORNE is an educator, editor, and essayist. She champions the work of writers through her efforts at the Writers' League of Texas and encourages readers via Literacy Austin. She has been the host of the Evening News on 91.7 FM KOOP Austin, and her pieces have appeared in Texas Writer and The Word, as well as other publications.

CINDY HUYSER is a poet whose work has appeared in Layers (Plain View Press, 1994), Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, and Wild Plum. Her poetry has also been included in a number of anthologies, including Affirming Flame, The Fairest of Them All, and each of the anthologies of the Austin International Poetry Festival.

KIM LANE is co-founder of the Austin WriterGrrls and the founder and editor of the award-winning Web site, AustinMama.com. Her works have appeared in Oxygen Media's Moms Online, Mothering and Pregnancy magazines, Salon.com and Salon's second Mothers Who Think anthology, entitled Life As We Know It. She has also been a commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."

JENNIFER MARINE is a freelance writer and former associate publisher for AustinMama.com where she also wrote an advice column. She is currently at work on a nonfiction book project and a screenplay.

EMILY A. MOORE is the brainchild of Austin WriterGrrls and author of seven nonfiction books including JavaScript for Dummies, 4th Edition (John Wiley & Sons, 2004). Her work has appeared in numerous publications including, Salon.com, The Writer, Austin-American Statesman, SF Weekly, and Dallas Observer.

BERNADETTE NOLL is a freelance writer for print and web-based publications, from The Funny Times to Fine Homebuilding, from AustinMama.com to Food and Service News.

HEATHER OSTERMAN is a 2003 finalist in the Writers' League of Texas Annual Manuscript Competition. Her work has appeared in Sasee Magazine, Alyson Publications, and in a variety of educational texts. She has been writing and performing stand-up comedy for seven years and was host for a radio talk show on KVRX for three years called "Love, Sex, and Why We Bother." She is currently doing stand-up and improv in New York and in pre-production of her first short film, "The Ex-Girlfriend's Club."

PAMELA KEMP PARKER is a Child Protective Services lawyer and writer whose work has been published in Long Island Parenting News, Northwest Family magazine, Atlanta Baby magazine, Child Law Practice, and the Texas Prosecutor.

BEE PEDERSEN is the author and editor of the anthology Women Write the War—The Voices of Women Behind Operation Iraqi Freedom, the author of humorous women's fiction, The Forty-Fitters, and a young adult novel, A Dandelion is Also Beautiful, published in Denmark. Her articles, short stories, and poems have appeared in American and Danish publications. Bee is recognized as a distinguished speaker by the McDermott Library, The University of Texas. Her latest suspense is Promises, to be published in 2006.

MICHELLE PETERSON has written numerous essays on her childhood and motherhood. Her work has appeared in AustinMama.com and Austin Woman magazine.

KIMBERLY COCKRILL PFLAUM is the co-editor of the Austin WriterGrrls anthology project, Grrl Talk. A humorist and novelist, her essays, short stories, and feature articles have appeared in Playgirl Magazine and AustinMama.com. She just completed a romantic comedy novel and is at work on a humorous memoir.

CAROLYN SCARBOROUGH is the author of more than 400 essays and articles that have appeared in magazines and newspapers worldwide. She also co-authored travel guidebooks and was travel editor at Southern Living magazine, as well as editor of The Ritz-Carlton Magazine, Tycoon, and Trump Style. In addition, she produces Backyard Pearls, an inspirational column published in newspapers and online at www.backyardpearls.com.

CHRISTIE L. SMITH is winner of a short story contest for WritersVillage.com. She aspires to publish more fiction, squeezing in time to write around work, kids' schedules and general life craziness.

BETH EAKMAN STROUT is a freelance writer, technical writer, editor, and professor of writing in Austin, Texas. Her essays have appeared in the Utne-award-winning Brain, Child magazine, on AustinMama.com, and in several anthologies including Brain, Child's Greatest Hits.

ANNE MARIE TURNER works as a successful grantwriter and has nine years experience as a professional organizer. Her writing has appeared in Balance Magazine, The NAPO News, and online at BarnesandNoble.com, SmeadOrganizingU.com, WilsonJones.com, HP.com, and AustinMama.com.

C. JEANETTE TYSON is an award-winning writer in the advertising industry, as well as the food columnist for AustinMama.com. Her work for clients such as the Saturn car and GlaxoSmithKline has been recognized for its storytelling appeal. An avid fiction writer, her work has also appeared in narrativemagazine.com.

WENDY WHEELER is a fiction writer, screenwriter and writing teacher. Her short stories have appeared in theme anthologies and periodicals, such as Snow White Blood Red, Analog, Dead of Night, Gorezone, Silver Birch Blood Moon, Aboriginal SF; and one story has been selected for the Year's Best Fantasy & Horror (editors: Datlow/Windling). www.wendy-wheeler.com.

DEBRA L. WINEGARTEN writes from Austin, Texas. RUTHE LEWIN WINEGARTEN (1929-2004) is the author of 18 books on Texas women's history and two-time winner of the Liz Carpenter Award by the Texas State Historical Association for her books, Black Texas Women: 150 Years of Trial and Triumph (University of Texas Press, 1995), and Capitol Women: Texas Female Legislators, 1923-1999 (University of Texas Press, 2000).
